Miami Valley Hospital's first Champions of Hope event will be honoring three remarkable people and their achievements in the fight against cancer. One of them will be one of our own colleagues, WCO-ONS member and treasurer, Darla Subler, RN, OCN who will be receiving the Medical Professional Award on November 5, 2009. Please be sure to congratulate her at our next program. Below are a few of the things that Darla’s co-workers had to say about her.

Having been an inpatient oncology nurse at MVH for the past 32 years, she has always gone above and beyond for staff members, students she has mentored, and patients and their families. Colleague and Member-at-Large Susie Newton RN, MS, AOCN, AOCNS has been chosen to be a faculty member to train the trainer for Middle East Nurses. Susie and her husband will be leaving for the West Bank in Israel on October 30, 2009 where she will teach nurses at Bethlehem University. Susie applied for and was chosen for the position after she read the following: “ONS is collaborating with the US-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research (www.bcpartnership.org) to develop a breast cancer training of trainers program, which ONS is developing from the current ONS Site-Specific Breast Cancer Online Course, for nurses in the Middle East. ONS is looking for several members with experience in the care and teaching of patients with breast cancer to serve as faculty for presenting this training program to three groups of Middle Eastern trainers. The faculty would travel to Morocco, Jordan, and the West Bank to present the training program.”
Chapter members Susie Newton and Joyce Marrs, along with Margie Hickey from New Orleans are the editors of Mosby's Oncology Nursing Advisor textbook. Several WCO chapter members are contributors to the book. Recently, they were informed that Genentech purchased 20,000 copies of their textbook intended for distribution to Oncology Nurses across the country. This will help ensure that the textbook has broad reach and exposure to Oncology Nurses, especially those in clinical oncology settings. Congratulations to Susie, Joyce, and Margie.

Since July 2007, The Dayton Physicians Hematology/Oncology practice has had 12 nurses obtain their OCN certification. Congratulations Rachel Harlow, Stacy Downs, Linda Knotts, Joni Bragg, Lisa Bennett, Barb Koenitzer, Patty D'Allesandris, Jackie Wysong, Deb Anderson, Kathy Muhlenkamp, June Green, and Donna Walker.

KUDOS to our WCO-ONS members for their contributions to the book Oncology Nursing Advisor: A Comprehensive Guide to Clinical Practice (2008). The textbook provides a quick reference for oncology nursing practice and two of the editors, Joyce Marrs, MS, APRN-BC, AOCNP and Susan Newton, RN, MS, AOCN and several authors were from our own WCO-ONS. The new second edition of Palliative Practices From A to Z for the Bedside Clinician contains useful listings for the care of patients with life-limiting malignancy. The book addresses symptom managment topics in an outline form and provides up to date evidenced based interventions.
